The Council appoints its own members following recommendations made by its Governance and Nominating Committee subsequent to consideration of the response to widely circulated candidate requests.
The Council’s structure includes representatives from various research fields, ethics and human rights specialists, as well as representatives of research participants and the public at large. The Council makes an effort to preserve gender balance as well as cultural and geographical variety.
Members are appointed to a three-year term, renewable once, by invitation. Mandate renewals and new appointments are issued by the Council on a staggered basis.
